LOCAL YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY IV RECRUITING STUDENTS FOR 2018-19

LAKELAND, FLORIDA (May 22, 2018) — The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is recruiting students for the fourth class of the Polk County chapter for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy is a 30-week program for students, ages 11-18, where students start and run their own business and form connections with community leaders. The direct mission of the Academy is to help students embrace their passion, energy, creativity and talents, and view entrepreneurship as synonymous with success and freedom. The Academy teaches kids to believe in themselves, to think big, and to understand that they can achieve anything they set their minds to. In the process, students learn as much about leadership and self-empowerment as they do about planning, budgeting, and production. Students in the Academy discover in themselves confidence, optimism, and capabilities they never knew they had.

Alexander Thomas, graduate of the 2017-18 class and owner of Aerial Perspective, shares his experience at the Academy, “I have had a great time participating in YEA! Polk this year. I have learned the starting principles of how to develop, run, and manage a business. The business I founded, Aerial Perspective Drone Services, is advancing significantly. On April 4th, I pitched my business idea to the YEA! Shark Tank investors and I received $1,300. With the awarded cash I purchased the business’ first drone! During the weeks following the student business presentations, we had several guest speakers. Ms. Dawn Decaminada from Polk County Small Business spoke to us about what the government can do for small businesses. Also Mr. Mark Van Wagenen led us on a tour of 2Infinity Extreme Air Sports. My fellow students and I got to ‘jump’ after the tour! My class and I have also learned about advertising, marketing, taxes, banking, and continuity and exit strategies. We also met three people representing the media (The Ledger, Spectrum Bay News 9, and Hall Communications, who spoke to us about press releases and how to interview with a reporter. On May 15th six students, including me, set up booths for a Trade Show event hosted by the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce at the RP Funding Center. I was able to get several leads and received a lot of encouragement and advice. I am looking forward to running Aerial Perspective Drone Services to the best of my ability.”

A graduate of the 2016-17 Young Entrepreneurs Academy, Logan Soria, CEO/Owner of Stand Up!, comments on the program, “You are going to go through a part-time business boot camp. That isn’t something you should be afraid of. As an entrepreneur, you have to embrace the barriers ahead – whether it be a lack of knowledge, funds, or ability. Trust me, if you try your best, you will make it through those hard times and you will be rewarded by your success.”

The Lakeland Chamber of Commerce chapter will accept up to 20 students; the early application deadline is June 30, 2018 and guarantees interviews for all applicants. The final application deadline is August 24, 2018, and students may be placed on a waiting list.

Classes will take place 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays at Southeastern University beginning in October.

The tuition for the program is $495, and there are need-based scholarships available.

The application for the Polk County program is available at http://www.lakelandchamber.com/pages/YEA or http://yeausa.org/. For questions or additional information, please contact Rebecca Fortier at (863) 688-8551 ext. 229, or by email at rfortier@lakelandchamber.com

Annual Networking Event Celebrates 19 Years

LAKELAND, FL (April 12, 2018) — For 19 years, the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce Citizens Bank & Trust has hosted one of the most popular networking events in Lakeland at their location downtown “on the deck.” The tradition continues this year and record attendance is anticipated. Thanks to the underwriting of Citizen Bank & Trust, the admission, only $10 per person, includes food samples and treats courtesy of local restaurants, live music by Norris Riggs and the Music Makers, photo booth, beverages, beer, and a chance to cast a vote for Lakeland’s annual King of the Wings competition.

Originally designed as an event to celebrate and thank loyal members of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce in 1999, the Luau After Hours has evolved into an annual restaurant competition and popular networking event with over 500 attendees representing local business and community leaders.

“Citizens Bank & Trust is proud to host this annual event once again and I know we will enjoy the festivities of the evening with everyone having a good time, networking and building relationships. Of course, we hope that the Luau will help generate new membership interest for the Lakeland Chamber and that’s why we have a $10 price for everyone – members and guests. Personally, this year’s event is special to me as the 2018 Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors,” says Weymon Snuggs, Executive Vice President, Citizens Bank & Trust.

This year, King of the Wings competitors include last year’s People’s Choice winner Smokin’ Aces BBQ and Judges’ Choice winner Beef O’Brady’s South. They will fight for the right to be the King of the Wings. Two restaurants return this year – Mojo’s Wings, Burgers, Beer (2016 winner) and The Winghouse of Lakeland. Newcomers include the Detroit Tigers / Flying Tigers, Duke’s Brewhouse Lakeland, Kick Yo’ Butt BBQ & Catering. Who will reign supreme for 2018?

For party-goers that want something other than wings, we invite them to try samples and treats at bd’s Mongolian Grill, Cold Stone Creamery, Got Candy & More Food Truck, Jet’s Pizza of Lakeland, Miller’s Ale House Lakeland, MOJO Federal Swine & Spirits, and the North Lakeland Rotary Club.

The Bernie Little Distributing Co. (BLD) has been integral in the success of the Luau After Hours by providing refreshing Budweiser products for attendees. This year, look for Michelob Ultra Golden and Bud Light Orange as BLD launches new products. And, they may even bring the Miss Budweiser hydroplane…
