BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS “RESTAURANT WEEK” KICKS OFF BIG EVENT
“Little Bites” Food Truck Challenge on Nov. 11

LAKELAND, FLORIDA (October 27, 2017) — The Big Brothers Big Sisters “Restaurant Week” kicks off on Saturday, November 4, runs until Friday, November 9, and wraps up at the BIG Event – Pirates on the Promenade on Saturday, November 11, with the “Restaurant Week” Awards, and the “Little Bites” Food Truck Challenge.

Garden Bistro, Ninteen61, and Lennys Grill and Subs are a few of the places helping to make a difference one meal at a time during “Restaurant Week” from Nov. 4-10. The “Little Bites” Food Truck Challenge on Saturday, November 11, at the BIG Event offers attendees an opportunity to taste the delicious wares of local food trucks – including Boom Boom Box, Chick’s Coop, Manolito’s, Sawadee Thai, Tacos Mazatlan, Tallulah’s by the Sea, and Twisted Plates.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is America’s oldest and largest youth mentoring organization and has been serving Polk County since its founding by a local teacher in 1970. Each year high school and adult mentors, “Bigs,” are paired with children, “Littles,” and visit them at school or take them on outings in the community. We provide background checks for volunteers, activities for Big/Little Matches, and ongoing professional support from our amazing staff at no cost to the volunteers or the families served.

LAKELAND, FLORIDA (October 24, 2017) — This year at the BIG Event Lakeland – Pirates on the Promenade – we invite you to don your finest pirate attire and enter our Costume Contest presented by CPS Investment Advisors! Here be a little information on times, locations, and rules for this year’s Costume Contest.

This is a family friendly costume event; costumes should not be too risqué! No pilfering, plundering, looting, brawling, or lewd behavior during registration or contest. Come dressed to register!

Awards: Saturday, November 11, 2017 – 6:30pm – Magnolia Building

Cost to register: FREE

Come claim ye awards for donning your finest pirate attire. The Finest Attired – in each category – will receive a Treasure Chest Prize! Categories / Award:
Best Rogue (18+ years) / $100
Best Lady Marauder (18+ years) / $100
Best Youth (0 – 12 years) / $50
Best Teen (13 – 17 years) / $50

Field may be narrowed to less than 10 contestants in each category. Please report to the Stage at the Magnolia Building for contest at 6:15pm for line-up. Everyone will receive a prize for entering.

Judging Criteria: Contestants will be judged on Costume Authenticity, Originality, Creativity, & Effort. Scoring will be from 1 to 5, with 5 being the highest score.
Authenticity – How accurate and thorough is the costume?
Originality – Does the costume stand out from the rest?
Creativity – Was the costume made creatively, colorfully, and does it show personality?
Effort – Did the costume take time and effort?

The support received for the BIG Event helps to underwrite programs and initiatives of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce. Since 1921, the Lakeland Chamber has served as an advocate for business.   • Young Entrepreneurs Academy, or YEA!:  A groundbreaking educational program that takes students in grades six through twelve through the process of starting and running real  businesses over the course of a full academic year. Students work in close cooperation with local leaders of industry, community members, and educators to develop ideas and objectives, write business plans, pitch potential investors, obtain funding, register with governmental agencies, develop their brand identity and much more! By the end of the class, students own and operate fully functioning businesses that can be carried on after graduation. Students learn to make a job–not just take a job!   • EMERGE Lakeland:  A meaningful networking organization of dedicated, talented young professionals ranging in age from 21-42 in Lakeland. This organization is a partnership of the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Central Florida. Groundwork for such an organization began in 2003. The partnership offers a unique opportunity for collaboration between the two organizations for the continued strengthening of the community.
  • Lakeland Chamber Foundation:  Through the generous contributions of member businesses and individuals, the Foundation is able to award small grants to not-for-profit organizations in the Lakeland area to support specific community and education betterment projects.
