Florida Career Institute Open House: March 10

Florida Career Institute (FCI) will have an Open House on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 from 4:00PM until 7:00PM.

Free tours and information on our programs will be provided. There will be a live broadcast provided by Radio station WPCV 97 County.   FCI will provide free food, drinks, goodies and provide a bouncy house for the children.  The  EMS students will be engaged in live rescue simulations and our Medical Assistant students will be checking blood pressures and vitals.  We will have our on-site daycare available to tour along with information about our upcoming free GED classes.  FCI  will be giving away a $50.00 gift certificate at the end of the Open House.

The event will be at the campus: 5925 Imperial Parkway, off Shepherd Road in Imperial Lakes.

Celebrate Harrison’s 20th Anniversary at “Party for the Arts!”

Have a great night out at “Party for the Arts!” on Friday, Mar. 19, at the Junior League of Greater Lakeland’s Sorosis Building (90 Lake Morton Drive), beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The evening promises to be a good time with auctions, live music, and special surprises, all in a great Lakeland venue.  Join Harrison parents, friends, family, and community members at the festivities celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Harrison School for the Arts!  The event is casual business attire.

Come enjoy the entertainment – a live band!  BULLY FOR YOU (B4U) is a four-piece rock cover band from right here in Lakeland, Florida.  The lineup features Craig on vocals and guitar, Brandon on guitar, John on bass, and Gary on drums. B4U have a ton of energy. Their show is fast-paced and the band plays music from the 60s to recent rock tracks, with a bunch of stuff in between.  The audience’s energy, interaction and participation are what make this band tick.

There will be a live professional auctioneer at the fundraiser.  Some of the auction items include a one-week stay at Anna Maria Island; a fishing excursion; hotel packages; arts and crafts; restaurant packages; and golf outings at great courses.

Proceeds from the tickets and auctions will directly benefit Harrison students and faculty; a portion of your admission is tax deductible.  The funds will provide student scholarships in the arts, faculty enrichment programs, visits from renowned guest artists, and honors recognition events, as well as support for the school-wide musical, and hospitality for Harrison’s Teacher Appreciation and the Senior Banquet.  The Harrison Parent Association, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation and is sponsoring the “Party for the Arts!” fundraising event.

Tickets are $25 each.  There are a limited number of tickets available, and reservations may be made on the Harrison secure site (http://www.harrisonarts.com/annualfundraiser) using a credit card.  Invite your friends for a great party. PGTV to Broadcast Census Webinar March 4

BARTOW, FL ( Feb. 19, 2010) – Learn how the 2010 Census will impact life in Polk County for the next decade during a live interactive webinar Thursday, March 4, from 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

A panel of experts will discuss how being counted in the 2010 Census will affect funding for many kinds of services, local representation in Congress and our ability to plan for the future of our communities.

In the PGTV studio, you’ll hear from Skarrn Ryvnine, Local Census Office Manager for Polk and Highlands Counties; Lynne Simpkins and Lynn Ann Schindler, senior planners for the City of Lakeland; and Dr. Gail McKinzie, Polk County Superintendent of Schools. Also offering assistance as an online panelist is Felicia Harvey, U.S. Census Media Specialist.

This free webinar requires no pre-registration or enrollment and provides a great opportunity for anyone to ask specific questions about how the 2010 Census affects us! Polk Future of Transit Workshop & Webinar March 2nd

Polk Growth Matters is a community forum hosted by the Polk County Growth Management Department.  Its purpose is to provide an opportunity for citizen education and constructive discussion on growth management issues.  It is intended to further a general and common understanding of current issues in Polk County.  Consistent with its focus on community education and dialogue, the forum is not used to advocate a position on issues.

Join us on Tuesday, March 2nd, to learn about the Polk Transit Authority and the Future of Transit in Polk County. Speaker Danny Ours, Executive Director of the Polk Transit Authority, will speak to residents about the following topics:

•         History of Transit in Polk County
•         Value of Transit to the Community
•         Countywide Transit Study
•         Creation of Polk Transit Authority
•         Existing Transit Services & Ridership Trends
•         PTA 5-Year Plan and Proposed Transit Service Improvements
•         Current vs. Proposed Investment in Transit
•         Need for Additional Service to High Speed Rail Station
•         Need for Dedicated Funding (What happens with reduced operating funds)
•         Proposed Referendum

The workshop will be at the Jim Miles Training Center 5204 US 98 Hwy South across from the Highland City Town Center, and begin at 6:30 p.m. with complimentary coffee and light refreshments.  Speaker presentations will begin at 7:00 p.m.
The workshop will also be offered as a webinar for residents that would prefer to stay home and watch from their computer. Residents can also email questions to the workshop leaders to be discussed during the workshop. The webinar is free and requires no pre-registration or enrollment.
