Road Runners Club of America Convention Comes to Lakeland

Running club representatives from around the country will be coming to Lakeland in just two weeks as the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) brings its national convention to The Lakeland Center April 21-25. The convention, which was hosted in San Francisco last year and Cincinnati the previous year, was brought to Polk County by Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing and the Lakeland Runners Club. The convention will bring 200 running enthusiasts and several big name speakers to Polk County. The highlight of the convention schedule is the speaker lineup that includes some of the biggest names in running and also an appearance by Orlando Magic Senior Vice President and one of America’s top motivational speakers, Pat Williams. The keynote address will be given by running legend Bill Rodgers who is best known for his victories in the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon in the late 1970s. In December of 1999, Rodgers was inducted into the National Track & Field Hall of Fame located in Indianapolis and in 1998, Rodgers was inducted in the first round to the National Distance Running Hall Of Fame in Utica, New York. Also speaking at the event will be Polk County native and distance running legend Keith Brantly. With a running career spanning three decades, many experts consider Keith Brantly to be one of the most successful runners in United States distance running history.

Throughout the convention, participants are able to attend educational seminars, experience the latest in running technology at an expo and hear from speakers from around the world about health and fitness issues.

The centerpiece of the convention will be Race the Lakes, the RRCA 5K National Championship, on Saturday, April 24.  The course for Race the Lakes will go around Lake Mirror, Lake Morton, and Lake Hollingsworth and through the streets of downtown Lakeland.
