2009 Polk County Veterans Day Celebration

Saturday, November 7, 2009

10am – 11am | Veterans Day Ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park in Lakeland, FL.

11am – 12pm | Veterans Parade through Downtown Lakeland

12pm – 2pm  | Veterans Celebration at Munn Park in Downtown Lakeland.

The Ceremony guest speaker will be Admiral Norb Ryan (U.S.N. Ret.).  The Polk County Veterans Council will be dedicating a Veterans Organization Monument.  All of the great pomp and circumstance your can enjoy.

The Parade runs from Veterans Memorial Park through Downtown Lakeland and concludes at Munn Park.  Motorcycles, Fire Engines, Trikes, Segways and more are participating.

The Veterans Celebration is at the end of the Parade at Munn Park in D/T Lakeland.  Various Veterans Organizations will have displays at the park, such as, the American Legion Rides Rock Climbing Wall, the AMVETS Grill tent, the Cold War Veterans Berlin Wall Display, the U.S. Military Veterans Motorcycle Club’s Wreath Across America and much much more.

“Chill.” Recession 101 Campaign Offers Common Sense Reminders

This weekend, I took a day-trip to St. Augustine to visit some family. While driving down I-95 is not necessarily as entertaining as driving down South Florida Ave, Sunday proved to be a little different. Just north of Port Orange, headed south, there is a billboard that looks much like this:

So, we all know what a huge nerd I can be about simple marketing pieces- like this- that put common sense out in front of our faces. This campaign is especially interesting. An anonymous donor from the East coast contributed some $20,000 and commissioned Charlie Robb (Charchin Creative)- the guy who made all those messages from God billboards- to create a campaign that would help our country “take a deep breath”. Outdoor Advertising Association members are donating time, space and materials to bring the messages to local communities.

Peace River Center and USFP Students Raise Awareness

From a Peace River Center press release:

This year on World Suicide Prevention Day Peace River Center and Kim Garrity, a University of South Florida Polytechnic Student, are taking strides to raise awareness in our community. Programming will include the DVD entitled the TRUTH about Suicide presented by Marie Dudek of the Central Florida Chapter of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention. Following the DVD presentation, a panel of suicide survivors and Peace River Center’s own suicide expert, Kirk Fasshauer, will answer questions. Panelists will share their stories and field questions about their experiences, how to create awareness, to find help, and to connect with local programs.

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds. It is imperative as a community we become aware of the signs and stop the prevalence of this type of death.

Catalyst Campaign Breaks $200,000!

Today, the Catalyst Campaign reached $201,028 leaving us just 43% remaining to our goal! This summer-long initiative provides the Chamber with means to produce a confident budget in 2010 and secures the calendar as well! The Chamber offers many outstanding marketing and advertising opportunities to businesses of all sizes, and the Catalyst Campaign is the best way to be sure that your place is secured for 2010.

Volunteers from 17 Chamber Member companies have been working since July 23 to secure sponsors and advertisers for 2010 events and publications. Top producers to date are:
