Web 2.0, are you ready

I thought of a couple of friends when I saw this article. It references why companies should jump into the Web 2.0 world, and details the bad habits of some others. For those that don’t know, Web 2.0 is a general term for the interaction on the web (social media like Facebook and Linkedin as well as  blogging, and micro blogging like Twitter  among a lot of other areas). A better definition can be found here.

So if you are interested in your organization diving in or just interested into what i am talking about, make sure you at least ask these “bigger” queestions before you consider these media channels:

- Are we willing to not just listen, but to respond and adapt based on the back and forth?
– Are we willing to become active participants – not just in our channels but in the other channels and spaces as well?
– Are we willing to change the focus from being about our company to being about everybody – us, them and the entire community?
– Are we willing to be participants with just as much fervour and passion when it’s not good for us, but good for the community or the industry as a whole?
– Are we willing to be open?
– Are we willing to be really, really open and transparent?

I am not even sure that i can answer yes to the questions on all the projects i have worked on, but now I will.  I hope you take a look at the article and other articles on this so called new media. Media as we know it is changing, and changing fast, where will your company be?

Why Buy Lakeland?

If you ask me, I can think of an endless number of reasons to remember our Chamber’s “Buy Lakeland” campaign.

… it builds our schools!

… it paves our roads!

… it employs our neighbors!

… it makes good cents!

In fact, if we’re not careful, I may just come up with a top ten list every day! As the holiday season gears up for big sales and even bigger stress, look to your local retailers for great gift ideas and even greater service. From large “big-box” stores to local mom & pop boutiques, our retailers offer a fabulous assortment of gift options along with all the assistance you need in shopping for your loved ones and your holiday time together.

This year, with the news reporting stories of economic downturn and cautious buyers, it is more important than ever that our community bands together to keep our dollars local! Remember, that gadget you bought online might not have cost quite as much, but your computer can’t provide you with the same service or assistance that your neighbor can! Visit our Preferred Business Directory to get started on your shopping and let our local retailers know how much you appreciate their contribution to our economy!

October Small Business of the Month

The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce would like to Announce that the November October Small Business of the Month is Verplanck Plumbing.

Bill and Holly Verplanck have owned Verplanck Plumbing, Inc. for 29 years. Specializing in residential new construction, renovation, and repair work, they design and install functional plumbing systems that effectively meet the needs of homeowners today. Even though they generally work for the building contractor, at Verplanck Plumbing, Inc. the customer’s satisfaction always comes first. They personally meet with their customers and assist them in their choice of fixtures appropriate for the job. They encourage their customers to communicate directly with them before, during and after the project. Always available to their customers, they quickly respond to the

ir needs as well as any complaints they may receive.

At Verplanck Plumbing, Inc. efficiency is the rule. Their 4,000 square foot facility houses their office, their material warehouse and their fleet of immaculate work trucks. At the end of the day, anything not used for a job MUST be put back in its place. Quality workmanship is so much easier when you can find the right part.

The Verplancks belong to the local and the national PHCC (Plumbing Heating & Cooling Contractors), the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce and the Polk County Builders Association. They have worked on several Habitat for Humanity homes and have provided free labor and all plumbing materials for several group homes for Noah’s Ark. Local high schools, baseball teams, the United Way, the SPCA, the Polk Museum of Art and others have all received financial support from Verplanck Plumbing.

At Verplanck Plumbing, the employees receive fully paid health insurance, life insurance, company matched IRA, and bonuses. Employee turnover is not a problem here. All of their plumbers are graduates of the PHCC Apprenticeship Program, and all graduated at the top of their class. In addition, all employees are trained in customer relations.

The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Verplanck Plumbing, Inc. as the October Small Business of the Month award winner.
