Southeastern Hosts Fall Commencement

LAKELAND, Fla. – On Friday, December 13, Southeastern University will host its fall commencement ceremony at Victory Church in Lakeland, Fla., at 6:30 p.m. Dr. Tom Mullins, the founding pastor of Christ Fellowship Church in South Florida, will be the commencement speaker. 

A total of 582 students qualified to march, with 370 participating in the ceremony. Students qualified to graduate are 14 doctoral candidates, 173 master’s candidates, 305 bachelor’s candidates, and 90 associate degree candidates. Students who are graduating are from Florida and 37 other states, as well as from seven countries, including Brazil, Canada and Nigeria. More than 160 of the graduates in this class come from 45 of Southeastern’s extension site locations in 22 states. This commencement brings the total number of Southeastern University graduates to 16,791.

Mullins is the founding pastor of Christ Fellowship Church, a multi-site church of 30,000 people, meeting on 10 campuses around South Florida and 90,000 online around the world. In addition to the church, Mullins and his wife, Donna, also founded Place of Hope, a residential community of homes for neglected and abused children in Palm Beach County, Fla. He also serves on the advisory board of Global Teen Challenge, a non-profit organization with a mission to help people in every nation find freedom from life-controlling addictions. Mullins is also an alumnus of Southeastern.

The student commencement speaker is Ethan Owen, who is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. A member of the inaugural wrestling team at Southeastern, Owen has been a part of the team for the past four years. Owen is the first wrestler in school history to achieve a No. 1 ranking in the NAIA. He is also a three-time NAIA men’s wrestling national qualifier and a two-time national All-American. After graduation, Owen will further his studies in the master’s of education literacy program at Southeastern. In the fall, Owen plans to begin his teaching career in the Polk County school system. He will continue to reside in Lakeland, Fla., with his wife, Gabby.
