  • Robert Bala, MD, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Family Medicine Physician at the Gateway location in North Lakeland. Dr. Bala has been practicing Family Medicine for 20 years. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and he completed his Residency in Family Practice at Florida Hospital in Orlando. He most recently served as a Family Medicine Physician at the Rocky Mount Family Medical Center in North Carolina. Certified by the American Board of Family Practice, Dr. Bala sees patients ages 2 years and older.
  • Shivani Patel, FNP-C, APRN, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Family Medicine Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. Ms. Patel earned her Master of Science degree in Nursing at Florida Southern College. She served as a Registered Nurse at Lakeland Regional Health since 2012, working in Medical Oncology and Gynecologic Oncology. Ms. Patel is certified in Family Medicine by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She sees patients of all ages at the Lake Miriam location.
  • Sue Connell, MSN, RN, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Certified Nurse Midwife. Ms. Connell has extensive experience as a Certified Nurse Midwife. She earned her Diploma in Professional Midwifery Studies at De Montfort University. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Philadelphia as well as a Master’s degree in Nursing with a concentration on Leadership from Aspen University Colorado. Ms. Connell, certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board, specializes in care of women ages 13 through menopause, delivering babies and post-partum care. She sees patients at the Grasslands Campus and the Carol Jenkins Pavilion for Women and Children.
  • Eric Wicks, MD, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as an Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine Physician. Dr. Wicks earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University. He completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Orlando Health and his Fellowship in Orthopedic Surgery Sports Medicine at the Rothman Institute through Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He serves as a Team Physician for Florida Southern College and previously served as a Team Physician for the Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Flyers, Philadelphia Phillies and Villanova University. Prior to earning his medical degree, Dr. Wicks worked as a Doctor of Chiropractic, Certified Athletic Trainer and Personal Trainer. Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the National Strength and Conditioning Association, Dr. Wicks sees children and adults at the Grasslands Campus.
  • Steven Betteridge, MSN, FNP-C, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Family Medicine Advanced Practice Registered Nurse at the Lake Miriam Walk-In Care location. Mr. Betteridge, who is certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, earned his Master of Science degree in Nursing at Chamberlain College of Nursing in Downers Grove, Illinois. He most recently served as a Trauma Nurse in Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center’s Emergency Department.
  • Narayan Pokhrel, MD, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Cardiologist seeing patients at both the Pablo Campus and the Medical Center. Dr. Pokhrel earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Nepal. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University/Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago and his Fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He previously served as an Internal Medicine Hospitalist with the Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna, Minnesota, and as a Cardiology Hospitalist at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.
  • Jaime Abuan, MD, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Family Medicine Physician at the Gateway location. Dr. Abuan earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in St. Maarten. He completed his Residency in Family Medicine at the University of Florida School of Medicine. He completed the Aerospace Medicine Primary Course as a Flight Surgeon at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine. Dr. Abuan is certified by the American Board of Family Practice. He most recently served as a Family Medicine physician in a Winter Haven private practice.
  • Ramy Husainy, DO, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Hospitalist at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. Dr. Husainy earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Kansas City University of Medicine & Biosciences. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine and his Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the University of Louisville. Certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine, Dr. Husainy most recently served as a Hospitalist at Indian River Medical Center in Vero Beach, Florida.
  • Abdul Nadeem, MD, joins Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Psychiatrist at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from Sindh Medical College/University of Karachi in Pakistan. He completed his Residency in Psychiatry at Cornell University/New York Hospital and his Fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at Brown University. Dr. Nadeem most recently served as a Staff Psychiatrist at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is certified to perform Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation.
  • Ankur K. Goyal, MD, M.Sc., has joined Lakeland Regional Health Physician Group as a Psychiatrist at the Behavioral Health Sciences outpatient location and at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Medical University of the Americas in the West Indies. He completed his Residency in General Psychiatry at Hennepin Healthcare and Regions Hospital in Minnesota.
  • Lakeland Regional Health President and CEO Elaine C. Thompson, PhD, FACHE, recently earned a prestigious spot on Florida Trend’s list of 500 Most Influential Business Leaders. She is among 24 professionals recognized under Life Sciences, which includes Hospitals, Institutes, Research, and Medical Manufacturing, in the special issue. This is the first time the respected monthly magazine has compiled this comprehensive listing. Florida Trend Publisher Andy Corty describes the list as “an excellent way to meet some Floridians who are making a difference in the state … .” Dr. Thompson, who joined Lakeland Regional Health in 2010, also has been named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s “Top 100 Non-Profit Hospital CEOs to Know” every year since the list’s inception in 2012.  She was named to “130 Women Healthcare Leaders to Know” by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2017. Dr. Thompson currently serves on the Florida Hospital Association’s Board of Trustees.
