14 Lakeland Schools Named Five Star By State of Florida
Fourteen Lakeland schools have received the prestigious Five Star School designation from the Florida Department of Education. Â The Five Star Award is given to schools for community service and community involvement efforts by including family, volunteers, school advisory councils and business partners.
Schools compiled and submitted portfolios documenting and quantifying community service work and activities from the 2008-2009 school year as a requirement for the Five Star Award.
Three Lakeland schools– Lake Gibson Middle,  Lawton Chiles Middle and North Lakeland Elementary– have been named Five Star for 13 consecutive years since the inception of the state’s Five Star recognition program. Churchwell Elementary and Crystal Lake Elementary were named  Five Star Schools for the first time.
Lakeland’s Five Star Schools are listed with the number of years they have achieved Five Star status listed in parentheses.
